Hemp is a distinct variety of the plant species Cannabis sativa L. but it is important to note that it is not the same as marijuana. Most countries around the world legally grow hemp, including Australia, but Australia currently has rigid laws regarding hemp food. This breed of cannabis can be found in foods, medicines, beauty products, and even in the automotive industry. Paul Benhaim is the CEO of Hemp Foods Australia and he adds that Mercedes Benz uses hemp in the production of every single one of their cars.

 

Healthy Outside

Generally hemp seed oil is used in the beauty industry because it promotes lustrous skin while preventing breakouts. This is probably due to the high levels of vitamin E in hemp seeds. The oil is also a natural anti-inflammatory which helps quell current breakouts. Some studies have also shown hemp seed oil to have phytosterol which works with cannabidiol to enhances the skin’s natural ability to heal itself.  Hemp seed oil can be applied directly to the face and/or other skin to get these benefits. It can also be added to a  face wash or moisturizer to get the benefits we’ve spoken about.

 

Healthy Inside

While there are some great beauty benefits in hemp seed oil there are even more health benefits for our insides. Hemp is high in antioxidants and low in carbohydrates. It also contains calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, and B group vitamins. It is also the only known food source of vitamin D3. The real magic in hemp is probably that it is exceptionally rich in ‘good fats’. Hemp, and specifically hemp seed oil, has shown to have the perfect amounts of Omega 3 and 6 in the optimal ratio for the human body. Healthy skin, balanced mental health, immune function, and even energy production are all dependent on essential fatty acids (EFAs). Hemp is a phenomenal source of EFAs. This explains why it is adding hemp to our diet is such a masterful way to take charge of our health.

 

Australia & Hemp

Currently Australia and New Zealand only allow hemp products to be sold for external use in beauty products and lotions. But hemp is grown and exported from Australia as food to almost every country in the world. Hemp won’t be able to be used as a food until the laws change. Luckily legislation changes are due to go before the Australia and New Zealand Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation in April 2017. With the nutritional, environmental, and financial benefits of hemp entering the food industry professionals are hoping that the government can catch on.
